Film 1 · Understanding the procedure
A 4-minute animated overview of what to expect during your visit.
This page is a resource for participants in our randomized study. It explains, step by step, what to expect — at your own pace, whenever you need it.
Start readingYou are reading this because you have chosen to take part in a randomized study at our department. The study compares two approaches to care, and your participation helps us understand which works best for future patients in similar situations.
Whichever group you are randomly assigned to, you will receive safe, evidence-based care from the same clinical team. This page is here to walk you through what happens at each stage, so you can feel informed and prepared.
Each step explains what will happen, what to bring, and how you may feel. Open any step to read more.
Before your visit, you will receive written information from us along with a short questionnaire. Please read everything carefully and bring any questions you have to your appointment.
You may eat and drink as normal unless we have told you otherwise. If you would like to bring someone with you for support, you are welcome to do so.
If you feel unsure about anything, please contact us — we are happy to talk things through with you in advance.
When you arrive, you will check in at reception and be shown to a private waiting area. A nurse will come to greet you and confirm a few details.
Please allow extra time for your visit — appointments can sometimes run longer than planned. There is no need to rush.
You will meet with a doctor or specialist nurse who will go through your medical history and answer any questions. They will explain everything before anything happens.
This is your time. Please ask anything you would like — there are no wrong questions, and we will not move forward until you feel comfortable.
The clinical team will explain each part of the procedure as it happens. You can ask them to pause or to talk you through anything at any time.
Pain relief and support are available. The team's priority is your comfort and safety throughout.
This step is also explained in detail in the films further down this page.
Afterwards, you will rest in a quiet room. A nurse will check on you and make sure you feel well before you leave.
You will be given written aftercare information, including who to contact if you have any concerns at home. Most people are able to go home the same day.
A follow-up will be arranged either by phone or in person, depending on what suits you best. This is a chance to check in on how you are doing and answer any further questions.
As a study participant, you will also be invited to share feedback about your experience — your input helps shape better care for others in the future.
These animated films were produced by our care team to walk you visually through the process.
